Firsts miss out again
Nuneaton 183 all out, Fillongley 160 all out
Before the game there were no less then 7 Fillongley players ‘practicing’ on the pitch even before any of the Nuneaton lads had come out of the dressing room! It was almost as if their aussie coach had got a new job. Cynics noted that the session was happening at the same time as the boundary rope and the fielding circle were was being put out and the covers were being put away, but that is just mean.
Phil Hammond had to drop out in the morning, and with Tom Nightingale, Tom Barber and Reg also not playing the batting looked a bit thin. Pro had been practicing his keeping skills , having taken over from Phil at Bedworth, but it was Azza who took the gloves today. He won the toss and bowled, and things liked rosy as teh Nuneaton openers started cautiously and then got out (20-2 in 11). Neale and Colkin then came together and forged a crucial partnership, taking the score to 93 at drinks with no further loss. Colkin took to Dave Slades bowling, hitting him for three sixes. Both were out shortly after drinks, and the innings lost momentum with only Taplin (27) looking dangerous. Shaun bowled 12 overs straight off (3-46) and then Binga polished off the tail for his seasons best 4-29.
184 to win looked about par, and Ben Fleming started impressively before falling to a very good catch in the fourth over. He had made 17 with three fours. There followed a horrendous collapse, leaving us at 58-6 in only 14 overs. Simon Blackmore and Duncan Moore batting and the tail to follow. At last we saw some proper application and they took the score to 85-6 at drinks. Duncan went for a creditable 8 then Junior hung around with Simon for another ten overs. There were still 18 overs to go when Junior was out, but Shawn carried on the good work and upped the run rate, putting on 50 and taking us to just 30 short of the target with 7 overs left, nearly up with the required rate. In the end we finished 23 short when Dave Slade was bowled off the last ball of the 50th over. Simon made 37 not out off 118 balls, an effort that deserved better reward.
We stay fifth. Bablake lead having beat Kenilworth and the title looks to be between them and Handsworth, who got 18 points from a winning draw against Southam.
