Winning draw at Bedworth

Not much of a report today because I only arrived half an hour into the Bedworth innings and I haven’t got the scorecard.

As against Bablake Phil lost the toss and were asked to bat. Given that Dave Slade and Ian Webster were unavailable batting was probably the best option for us, and so it proved. Ben Fleming quickly got on top of the Bedworth attack, scoring quickly and setting us up for a big total. He was out in only the 30th over for 94, having scored very quickly after reaching his 50. Aaron Blackmore kept up the scoring with 73 not out and Tom Nightingale made 35. We finished on 269-6 which is a big total by any standards.

The Bedworth openers Scott Friswell and Plant started well but never got close to the required rate of five and a half runs per over. The main danger was the in form Friswell, who looked as good as anybody we have seen this year. His innings of 70 odd ended in an unexpected way when he smacked a rank full toos from Tom Nightingale straight to Reg. After that Bedworth focussed on the target of 203 which gave them 4 losing draw points and 4 batting points. Some big hits at the end saw them to 212-7. We bowled well, with Junior taking 3 wickets and Shawn 2, but we really needed wickets earlier if we were to force what I think would have been our first ever win over Bedworth.

Bablake lead having put together a run of 5 wins, but theyhave still to play Kenilworth and Atherstone. We are 5th, 26 behind. To have a sniff I think we need four wins now. Nuneaton got a 11 points from a draw against Southam so they will probably be in this division next year. I still think Handsworth will win it.
