Rain foils firsts
Eight points was a meagre return from a vastly improved performance against Kings Heath. We were surprised to find that even the uncovered wickets were pretty dry, and it looked to me to be a day to bat. So we won the toss and put the opposition in as usual, so what do I know? I saw that Joyce, who has clubbed us around the ground before was missing from the KH lineup and asked the other scorer about him. Too many injuries. Too old. Past it. Ready to chuck it in. Checking the seconds score, maybe there’s a bit left in the tank yet!
Kings Heath lost Davis in the first over but Jeffries and Moreton then put together a stand to take the score to 120-1 in 20 overs, on target for 300. Phil Hammond tried Binga, Nighters and Webby but runs kept coming till Simon Blackmore took over. He finally got Jeffries for 57 and went on to bowl 15 overs, taking two more wickets. Only Blythe (37) and Moreton, who went on to make a patient 89, contributed in the second half of the innings. Steve Gardner blew away the tail and Kings were all out for 238 in the last over.
In reply Ben Fleming and Reg put together an opening stand of 73 in 14 overs before Ben fell to a tremendous catch on the boundary taken by yongster Payne for 44. Andy Carty joined Reg and the pair looked in control, taking the score to 110 at drinks. The weather had started to close in now and it was clear that we weren’t going to be playing anything like 50 overs this innings. The runs needed if the game ended at 25 overs was 120. Ten short of this it was time to attack but we ended just short. Only ten balls were bowled after drinks and the fourteen runs added, including a big straight six from Reg off the last delivery, was three short. So four bowling points and four for a losing draw, which dropped us one place to fourth, still above Nuneaton. Next week it’s leaders Kenilworth.
