Opening day win for firsts

The firsts started their league campaign with a comfortable win over King’s Heath at Fillongley today. Phil won the toss and thought hard before choosing to field. The decision soon looked to be the right one as both openers were dismissed before the end of the 4th over. Moreton and Payne set about rebuilding but could only make painfully slow progress against Junior and Shawn, and then Dave Slade and Tom Nightingale. Payne was the first of three stumpings for Phil Hammond, this with the score at 28 in the 19th over. After this only Joyce (29) and Blythe (17) offered any resistance and it was left to number 3 Moreton to hold the innings together . He was on 39 off 102 balls and running out of partners before hittting 23 off Dave Slades last over and then being last out for 66.  Pick of the bowlers was again Steve Gardner, whose last 20 wickets have cost a pretty remarkable 69 runs.

There was never any real danger of  us not making the target of 133 to win. Tom Barber and Dan Smith took the score to 22, and then Andy Carty and Dan Smith moved us on to 53 before Smith was run out going for a ridiculous third run. After that Pro and Aaron Blackmore were able to take us to almost home with a stand of 77. Pro was man of the match with 52 not out (11×4, ) at a run a ball.

An excellent start to the season, but we expect Kenilworth to provide a sterner test next week.

If reports are to be put on the site, lets make sure spelling and grammer are correct, otherwise it looks shoddy.

  • Michael,

I’m glad to see you’re reading the site. If you feel like giving some positive input, and writing some reports yourself, that would be great. In the meantime, please refrain from negative remarks about the work of people who are taking the time and trouble to help out.

    Thanks
    Steve
