First win of the season against Hilversumsche
A high scoring home game against Hilversumsche saw Fillongley claim their first win of the 2009 season.
The Dutch visitors, on their pre-season tour, elected to bat first, and initially seemed to be in trouble as they lost regular early wickets. The Fillongley change bowling however proved more to their taste, as they recovered remarkably, eventually being all out for 236 in just the 35th over. Most notable amongst the bowlers was Aaron Blackmore, whose two overs were plundered for 57 runs.
Fillongley’s reply also began badly, with Tom Barber being dismissed for a duck in the first over. However Phil Hammond (50 something) and Dan Smith (80 something) shared a century stand to set a strong foundation for the run chase. Aaron also partially redeemed himself with a quickfire 50.
After the game Hilversumsche presented their man of the match awards (Fillongley’s MoM was Harry Tregonning), and also carried out a ritual known as “Jaqs”. This seemed to involve players hitting each other with a small cricket bat, but your correspondent kept a fairly safe distance, and so can’t provide full information on the details.
The day was completed with some excellent chilli, so many thanks to Tim and Julie Jerrard Dinn for that.
All in all a good day, and Hilversumsche proved excellent visitors. Best wishes to Hilversumsche for the rest of their tour, and lets hope that their player who went to hospital with a suspected dislocated finger has a rapid recovery.
